The Government of Saint Lucia is taking a three-phased approach to banning Styrofoam and select plastic items.

The first phase was implemented on 1 August 2019 when St.Lucia joined other Caribbean countries in implementing a legislative ban on the importation of disposable trays, hinged takeaway containers, bowls, cups, plates, cup lids, bowl lids and Styrofoam disposable plates.

On August 1, 2020, this ban extends to the manufacture, use and sale of food in the aforementioned items and the importation of disposable forks, spoons, knives, straws, stirrers and egg cartons.

The ban on the manufacture, sale, use, distribution and sale of disposable forks, spoons, knives, straws, stirrers and egg cartons comes into effect on August 1, 2021.

Any individual who contravenes this ban faces a fine of EC$3,000 to ECS$15,000. Authorized officers may enter premises and seize banned items that are being used contrary to the provisions.
