Jean-Claude Counand

In 2018, Jean-Claude Cournand of Trinidad & Tobago, through his work with The 2 Cents Movement, received the Queens Young Leaders Award at Buckingham Palace, London, England. Also, in 2018, the 2 Cents Movement was awarded “Most Outstanding Youth Organisation” and “Most Effective Youth Programme” at the Trinidad and Tobago National Youth Awards.

Jean-Claude, a Chevening Scholar and emerging social entrepreneur from Trinidad & Tobago, founded the USC Debating Society which has since evolved into The 2 Cents Movement.

The 2 Cents Movement is a Caribbean-based NGO that uses spoken word poetry to develop socially responsible youth. The organization’s vision is a world where young people are empowered to contribute their ideas and action for change, that is, to pitch in their ‘2 cents’.  It employs eight (8) persons full-time and coordinates outreach reach in fifty (50) secondary schools, thirty (30) primary schools and on two (2) universities – engaging 40,000 youth in its programmes annually. 

Jean-Claude is a co-founder/Director of Girl Be Heard Trinidad and Tobago and serves as Youth Outreach Manager for Bocas Lit Fest.  

Jean-Claude is currently pursuing an MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Edinburgh and is part of Global Shapers Edinburgh Hub, an initiative of the World Economic Forum.
